Junior Volunteer Program

Comprehensive Training for Future Medical Caregivers

Summer 2020

The Junior Volunteer Program is a 6-week program designed to provide 20 qualified students ages 15 through 17 with experiential and educational information about healthcare careers and volunteerism. Students must be 15 by June of 2020.

Following a review of all applications, applicants will be called for interviews. To be accepted into the program, you must pass a background check and drug screen. Confirmation of final acceptance will be mailed to your home address. At that time, you will be scheduled for hospital orientation and volunteer training. This training is mandatory for all volunteers.

Following orientation, the program continues on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for 4 hours each day for the rest of June and most of July..

Starting times will vary and are determined by the area in which you are assigned. Consequently, you must have transportation to and from Medical City McKinney. Lunch will be provided.

To be considered you must:

  1. fill out the Junior Volunteer Application Form
  2. provide a one page biography including motivation for wanting to participate
  3. provide 2 letters of recommendation (1 teacher and 1 from an adult outside your immediate family – i.e. pastor, neighbor, friend who has known you for a minimum of 2 years)

Q. What is the deadline for submitting the Junior Volunteer application?

A. The deadline for receipt of the application is 4:00 p.m. on April 15th. No exceptions!

Q. What is the age range for being a Junior Volunteer?

A. Junior Volunteers are students ages 15 to 17 years of age. Must attain age 15 by the first day of the program .

Q. Am I allowed to miss any days during the six-week program?

A. Absences of more than 2 days will result in forfeiture of all volunteer hours earned.

Q. Is there a face-to-face interview prior to acceptance into the program?

A. A select number of students will be chosen for interviews prior to being accepted into the program.

Q. Do I get to choose which department I want to volunteer in?

A. The program is designed to rotate students through different departments for a broader hospital experience. Student's preferences will be taken into consideration; however, placement will depend on department availability and scheduling.

Q. How many volunteer hours do students receive during the program?

A. Students will volunteer 4 hours a day, 3 days a week for 6 weeks. Hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., however, starting times may vary depending on the department's needs.
